about aston

This site is dedicated to Fran McLaughin who created the original site from which we were all motivated to present all of what you see. He dedicated much of the final years of his life creating Aston Township's first municipal website. In thanks, we have maintained some of what he created here in memory of his efforts. The banner, the color scheme, and some of the design work still remain in his honor.

Garage Must Go
To Clear Corner For Dorm

Aston Commissioners recently approved the issuance of a demolition permit to West Cork, Inc. The developer can now tear down an old garage/residence at the intersection of Convent and Concord rds. and replace the vacant structure with student housing for 84 Neumann College students.

Prior to rendering the unanimous decision, commissioners held a special hearing on Sept. 10 to allow historical preservationists a chance to make a case for saving the former auto repair shop on the basis of historical value.

Commissioners were impressed by the fact that Fishers Corner was part of an enormous British Army encampment after the Battle of Brandywine. But the board did not hear compelling evidence that the existing 20th-century garage held historical significance – at least not enough to warrant derailing West Cork’s approved dormitory plan.

This vacant building at Fisher’s Corner will soon be demolished. The former garage sits on historic ground, but is not itself historic.

Micun Named Outstanding Citizen

Longtime Valley Green Dr. resident Bruno Micun was recently hailed as Aston Township’s Outstanding Citizen for 2008.

Micun has been an Aston Lions Club member for many years, serving as president, then as “lion tamer” to rally the troops at meetings. He is a past recipient of the Melvin Jones Award – the highest honor bestowed by Lions Clubs around the world.

Micun has been instrumental in such projects as organizing the Lions’ township telephone directory and updating the township map (with every new street and house shown) for use by the police and fire departments.

Micun is also an active member of Mt. Hope UMC, where he has videotaped many functions.

New K-9 Corps
Funded By Donations

The Aston Police K-9 Officers Jax and Mikell Jones recently completed an intensive training course and will be working the streets of the township for the first time in October.

Township taxpayers have not borne any expense to restart the K-9 program. The entire cost is being absorbed through donations from residents and businesses.

To cover ongoing expenses such as food, vet bills, and equipment replacement, Jones is hoping to procure grant funding and more donations from the community.

The purchase of dog harnesses and a $2,000 full-body bite suit for training are immediate needs. Any individual or corporate sponsors willing to help out can call Jones at 610-497-2633.

Police Committee Chairman/Commissioner Gary Robinson joins Officers Mikell Jones and Jax in thanking General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Aston President Norma Locke for the organization’s $1,000 donation.
