 Commissioners Ice
Liquor
License Transfer

After considerable debate, it has been determined by the township that allowing the transfer of a liquor license to the Ice Works skating facility (701 Duttons Mill Rd.) “would adversely affect the health, welfare, peace and morals of its citizens.” On Oct. 17, commissioners voted 6-1 to deny the requested transfer, with Commissioner James McGinn in dissent, citing his support of Aston businesses.

The liquor license is currently held by a Middletown establishment. Inter-municipal transfer of such licenses was legalized by the state a few years ago, but township officials took issue with plans to serve alcohol at the four-rink complex, where roughly 65 percent of the clientele are underage.

Ice Works co-owner Mickey DiIoia, of Glen Mills, noted that serving alcoholic beverages was intended to be an “accommodation” for adult visitors, since the facility’s “main business is ice.”

Best Aston Community Day Yet

The sixth annual Aston Township Community Day was held on a warm and sunny Saturday, Oct. 6. A parade featuring floats and banners, the Sun Valley  Marching  Band,  and the Irish

Some folks came to the sixth annual Aston Community Day just to clown around.

American String Band started at Neumann College and moved east along Concord Rd. to the Community Center.

The ninth annual Aston Business Association expo was among the free offerings at the Community Center, where festivities ran from 11am to 4pm, starting with a flag raising ceremony and the singing of patriotic songs. Family fun included games and food, as well as bike-decorating and Mummer’s Strut contests for kids. A DJ provided the music, while children played on a moon bounce, giant slide, and rock-climbing wall.

A crowd of over 3,500 came out for this year’s event – the largest turnout ever.

Congratulations to Diane Johnson, one of the mainstay organizers of Community Day, on her selection as Aston Township 2007 Outstanding Citizen of the Year.

There were lots of smiling faces and tasty treats served up outside the Aston Community Center.

Curbside leaf collections will continue (weather permitting) with revolving pick-up zones (A-H) through December. Residents are asked to rake leaves to the curb, but not into the street, to avoid clogging stormwater inlets. If you have no curb, rake piles to edge of paving on the grass. Please remove all sticks, rocks and stones that could damage the machine. Leaves must be ready for pick up by 6am on collection day.

Edgar Residents See Progress

The 13 Edgar Ave. homeowners who suffered damages from a septic backup on March 20 are moving towards resolution of their problems. As of mid-October, insurance carriers had reached a claim settlement with 10 of the afflicted residents, while one settlement was partially negotiated and two others are still pending, according to Seventh Ward Commissioner Michael Higgins, who continues to serve as a facilitator.

The Chester Water Co. will soon be installing pressure-reducing valves in the neighborhood to help avoid a repeat of the flood, which was caused by a break in a water main.

The Southwest Delaware County Municipal Authority’s operations committee is reviewing the findings of recent tests and remediation options and will be sharing that information at a special meeting at the municipal building. Edgar Ave. homeowners will be notified of the meeting date by letter.

Commissioner/Recreation Chairman Michael Higgins is forming a residents’ advisory recreation committee this fall, with one representative from each ward. Interested parties should contact their respective commissioners.
