The Township parks
and open space owned by the Township can be classified as (1)
mini-parks, such as Collins Park and Poore Park, (2) neighborhood
parks, such as Vinsmith Park and Eagle Field, (3) community parks
such as Weir Park; (4) natural resource areas such as Valleybrook
Open Space (66.5 acres) and Bridgewater Open Space (46 acres); and
(5) Special Purpose Facilities such as the Aston Community Center.
Acreage owned by
homeowners associations provides additional and alternative open
space and recreational facilities for sections of the Township.
Most of the homeowners associations space is the direct result of
the Township’s requiring developers to set aside space within
communities during the development process. Both
Ballinahinch and Greenbriar Place are examples of the Township’s
requirements on prior developers. In both cases, the “set
aside” has provided open space that otherwise would require a
more costly alternative.
The
newly approved plan is innovative when it comes to financing the
plan’s objectives. Traditional means of funding the plan from
the “general fund” via the taxpayers are to be augmented by
grant and “partnership” opportunities. The plan suggests that
“procurement” can be provided by working with a number of
public and private partners such as Pennsylvania Recreation and
Parks Association, PA Horticultural Society, PECO Green Region
Grant Program, and PA Department of Community and Economic
Development. A good example of such “partnering” is the Rails
to Trails project to be incorporated into the Township’s natural
resources with the creation of the proposed Chester Creek Rail
Trail. This already approved project is in conjunction with the
“Friends
of the Chester Creek”, a Pennsylvania non- profit, 501(c)3,
organization. This project will
add significant recreational resources to the Township’s coffers
without significant cost.
When it comes to administrating the
plan, new strategies call for more
|
interaction of the
Township with community groups in order to provide a more diverse
set of recreational activities. A successful example is the
creative “joint venturing” of the Township with Neumann
College in forming Camp Rainbow. In addition, the plan calls for
greater participation of local volunteer groups and the general
public to assist in neighborhood and mini-park care. Many
organizations are already raking and seeding ball fields!
All in all, this
ambitious plan sets goals high but achievable in order to assure
that Aston remains a wonderful place to call home. This time
around you may make the difference! Call 610.494.1636 and see if
you or your group can help!
