A flurry of activity is scheduled for the General Federation of Women’s Club during the month of May 2006.

   The annual GFWC Pennsylvania Convention will be held at the Chatteau Resort in Tannersville from Thursday, May 4 to Saturday, May 6. 

   A book wrapping fundraiser will be held at Border’s Books in Concordville on Thursday, May 11 to Saturday, May 13.  Donations received from this event will benefit Aston club charities.

   Virginia E. Burbage, GFWC’s treasurer, will host the club’s monthly board meeting at her home on Monday, May 15 at 7pm.

   The 2006-2008 board members of the General Federation of Women’s Club will be recognized at the installation dinner held at the Little Inn in Media on Monday, May 22 at 6pm.  The 2006-2008 board members are:  Norma S. Locke, president; Jean L. Larsen, vice president; Marionette L. Shahadi, secretary; and Virginia E. Burbage, treasurer.

The board of commissioners and Neumann College are proud to work together, once again, and offer the summer camp experience, Camp Rainbow, to all Aston Township residents entering 1st through 5th grades in fall 2006. 

   Camp Rainbow is located at the Aston Community Center (Rick Owsley Field House) and is held every Monday through Friday, 9am to 12 Noon, beginning June 26 and ending August 4.  (The camp will be closed on Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4 for the holiday.) 

   Cost is only $15 per child, per week, and $10 for the week of July 3.  Registration deadline is June 23, 2006.

The following information appeared in last month’s issue of Township Times regarding the revised schedule for trash pickup for certain areas within the township.  This revision and inclusion of the streets listed below become effective May 1, 2006.

May 1, 2006 marks the beginning of the second trash pickup for the upcoming spring and summer months.  Please note the following schedule and disregard the schedule that is listed in the township calendar.  If you have any questions regarding these changes you may contact the public works department at 610-494-8005 or the township office at 610-494-1636.

Historian Clarence R. Hickey, Jr., of Rockville, Maryland will be Aston Historical Society’s special guest on Thursday, May 11 at 7:30pm when he will reenact the life of Dr. Edward E. Stonestreet (1830-1903) at the Aston Township Municipal Building. 

   Dr. Stonestreet was a physician who practiced medicine for 51 years that included service during the Civil War.  Mr. Hickey will display a complete set of United States government issued Civil War medical instruments.  The public is welcome to attend.

 

The Aston Historical Society, located at the Aston Community Center, is open each Monday (closed Memorial Day) from 11am to 2pm and 6:30pm to 8:30pm; and Wednesday 11am to 2pm.

 

The Aston Township Lioness’ are sponsoring a flea market at the Aston Community Center on Saturday, May 6, from 7am to 2pm.  You don’t want to miss this event!

   The Aston Township Lioness board meeting will take place at 7pm on Thursday, May 4 at the Aston Community Center.

   The installation dinner for Aston Township Lioness’ will be held at Hennessey’s Restaurant at 6:30pm on Thursday, May 25.

Aston Township is hosting two course offerings for 50+ learners at the Aston Community Center, sponsored by Senior Community Services (SCS), during the month of May 2006.

   AARP Driving Course is a program designed to assist older drivers improve their driving skills.  Insurance discounts are available upon completion of this course.

May 16 & 18; 9am to 1pm

   Hearing Loss information will be presented and a free screening will be provided.

May 18; 2pm to 4pm

Commissioner Gary Robinson will host the first annual 4th ward Beef and Beverage on Saturday, May 13 from 7pm to 11pm at Aston-Beechwood Firehouse.  Come out and join your neighbors and friends for a fun night filled with food, beverage, door prizes and music!  Tickets are $25 per person or $45 per couple.

Congratulations to Thomas Morgan, Jr., who recently received the Delaware County Firefighter’s Association Christopher Kangas Firefighter of the Year Award. 

   Since the age of 14, Thomas has been a member of the Green Ridge Fire Company and was a friend of Christopher Kangas who, while responding to a fire call, was killed in 2002.

   Thomas is the son of Patricia and Thomas Morgan, Sr., and plans to study fire science and fire engineering at Delaware County Community College after his June 2006 graduation from Sun Valley High School. 

Aston Township will hold a “Rabies Clinic” on Thursday, May 4, 2006 from 6pm to 8pm in the public works garage.  Dr. Brzezinski from the Aston Veterinary Hospital will oversee this clinic.  The price is $5 per animal. 

This year’s summer reading theme for Aston Public Library, “Paws, Claws, Scales, and Tales,” will provide a variety of delightful events.  Commencing the
