about aston

This site is dedicated to Fran McLaughin who created the original site from which we were all motivated to present all of what you see. He dedicated much of the final years of his life creating Aston Township's first municipal website. In thanks, we have maintained some of what he created here in memory of his efforts. The banner, the color scheme, and some of the design work still remain in his honor.

Township Opposes County Tax Collections

The Aston Township Board of Commissioners will be sending official letters to state senators and representatives in Harrisburg declaring their unanimous opposition to House Bill #1550. The pending measure would authorize the county to collect all earned income tax (not property taxes), instead of private companies like Centax - Aston Township’s contracted collection agency.

“Commissioners have a concern over how the township would receive their revenue through county collection, versus now, when the township receives it in a timely manner,” the letter will state.

SWDCMA Meeting Bears Repeating

As of January, all Edgar Ave. homeowners who suffered losses from a septic backup last spring have had their insurance claims settled.

Representatives of the Southwest Delaware County Municipal Authority met with several Edgar residents on Feb. 4 at the municipal building. Discussion centered on a recent engineering study and remediation options to guard against future recurrences, with the favored choice of the residents being the installation of two sets of check valves at the sewer authority’s expense.

Grants will be pursued to provide funding for the remediation measures,

according to SWDCMA board member Nelson Schaffer.

Only 8 of the 22 invited families were represented at last month’s meeting, so another meeting will be necessary. Edgar homeowners will be notified of the pending second session by mail.

Commissioners Vice President Frank Murphy recently reported on the progress of a Southwest Delaware County Municipal Authority committee consisting of himself and fellow commissioners Michael Higgins and Gary Robinson. While further research is needed to chart the best course for the sewer authority’s future, Murphy assured residents that the township would not simply abandon its investment in the facility.

“The situation is very complicated,” Murphy noted. “Many hours have been spent working with the sewer authority trying to figure out the best path forward…After all the years of sacrifice by the people of this township, the board of commissioners is not going to have a fire sale for the sewer authority.”

A first step will be hiring a firm or professional (at an expense of no more than $20,000) to determine the market value of SWDCMA, and another entity at the same cost cap to review “employee impact, rate stability, customer service, and other non-valuation issues.”

Murphy noted that the outlined research will take a few months to complete.

All SWDCMA public meetings are held at the Aston Township municipal building, unless advertised otherwise.
