Professional Profiles
Agatha
Lyons has served as Director of the Aston Public Library for over
5 years.
 |
“One of the
best
experiences in working in a smaller,
community based library like ours is that we get to know
our
regular
|
customers by their first name.
We get to know their reading habits and can recommend
selections they might not ordinarily choose,” Agatha explains.
Agatha, the only full-time employee of the library, is
busy every moment during the 59 hours a week that the library is
open. As Director,
she is responsible for hiring library personnel, selecting and
ordering of books, and assisting the Library Board in developing
the yearly budget.
“I also believe that working with Delaware County
Library System enhances what we can give to the community.
Our patrons have the advantage of getting books from any
library in the county,” adds Agatha.
“Today, children have so many activities from which to
choose. Developing
a fondness and appreciation for learning through books has to be
fun and interesting if children are to pursue knowledge in this
way. To foster this
pursuit, we have a summer reading program and four weekly
children’s story times. These
sessions are so popular that we have a waiting list to
register.”
Another children’s program offered is “Science in
the Summer.” This
year, Glaxo will sponsor a two-week adventure in July on marine
science.
Ginny Wakefield, President of the Aston Library Board,
attributes the smooth running of the library to Agatha’s
wealth of experience and knowledge.
“Agatha has a Master’s degree in Library Science and
20 years of academic and public library experience,” said
Ginny. “She knows
what it takes to be successful.”
Aston Public Library also offers practical services
such as copying and faxing capabilities.
Adults can join the monthly book discussion group which
meets the third Wednesday of every month.
