Bill Barkby, partner in Nostalgia Miniatures, New Oxford, PA, has been contracted to provide the miniature replica clocks that are being sold as part of the fund-raising campaign. “Each miniature clock will be hand-crafted out of pewter with two watch movements. They are an exact replica of the Aston street clock.” Barkby said.

Each miniature replica includes the name of Aston Township as a header; these miniatures are being sold by The Aston Business Association. Information on how to purchase the clock is available at the Community Center, Township building and on the Web site at www.astonbsn.com or   www.astontownship.net.  Clocks will be sold at First Keystone Bank on Pennell Rd or Iron Workers Bank on Concord Rd. Please, help support our campaign as a sign of pride for our community.

Community Profiles

It was a long walk even for a sunny May day. The breeze made a sports jacket seem appropriate. Cemeteries are always sad places – nothing is going to change that. Looking around, the Flags seem to create a red, white and blue blush across the horizon. Another service about to begin. These services at graveside are always emotionally moving events. The members of the ‘honor guard’ are gathered. Clad in starched white shirts, pressed trousers. Twenty or so men are gathered here to honor a comrade. Some don red, others blue, hats labeled with their chosen branch of service and their affiliated group. Their shirts are filled with ribbons and medals from which the history of this great Nation could be extracted.

Who are those guys? Did you ever wonder who are the men conducting these services in honor of our nation’s servicemen? It only seems fitting with the thought of Memorial Day fresh and Flag Day around the corner, that their story be told.

Today I am the guest of Dick Phillips, one of these men and a resident of Aston Township. As he introduces me to his fellow Veterans, I look them in the eye and feel the strength of their commitment, and as I shake their hands, feel the warmth of their dedication. Each one in turn, a hand shake and a welcoming smile.  Not young men, but spirited and rock solid. The kind of men that Brokaw and Russert write about when they try to describe the intangible mettle of that generation.
