“ICE” (in case of emergency) is a national campaign that
began in April, 2005 by Bob Brotchie, a paramedic stationed in |
|
Cambridge, England, who came up with the idea of listing ICE in cell
phone address books and other mobile address devices. In crisis situations, when every second counts, locating a
person’s next of kin can make a difference between life and death.
Emergency personnel can more easily obtain a contact name and
phone number, to better assist someone needing emergency care, by
simply accessing a patient’s address book, locating an ICE contact
and pressing the “send” key.
In addition to using ICE for medical emergency purposes, ICE
can also assist someone who may find a lost mobile device (cell
phone, palm pilot, etc.) and can better track down the owner.
There is much more information available on the web,
including articles that have appeared in USA Today, Chicago Tribune,
and Washington Post, by typing in “cell phone ICE” in a search
toolbar.
