Lions Elect New Prez

The Aston Lions Club recently elected a new president in John G. Vernon, a lifetime Aston resident. Vernon is a 1968 Sun Valley grad; a US Navy Vietnam veteran; and a Cheyney State College alum. He retired after working 26 years at Sun Oil as a chief dockman.

Vernon states his goals as Lions president to be “aiding others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy.”

Commissioners trying to help …continued.

Many residents thought that the amount they would be reimbursed was decided when a brokerage adjuster calculated loss totals, factoring in depreciation of furnishings. Some homeowners were surprised to find that an insurance company adjuster in Georgia then wanted to deduct even more for depreciation.
"They are going to negotiate…that’s the way the policy is written,” Higgins said of insurance companies. “There’s nothing we can do about that,” he added.
Higgins and fellow Commissioner Mike Fulginiti, both insurance professionals, have tried to explain the intricacies of the insurance world to the flood victims.
“This is a very, very complex claim, because of not only property damage, but environmental coverage,” Higgins said.
“We need to take all these concerns, and in the advisory and facilitating role Mike (Higgins) has played, put these concerns together for these people who are suffering with this thing, and ask the right people what is going on,” Commissioner Frank Murphy suggested.
When the embattled residents expressed fear that their claims might be trampled by bureaucracy, they were promised that township commissioners will remain in their corner.

“Don’t worry about that. We’re not going to let them blow it off,” Murphy assured the homeowners.
The long-term solution to recurring septic back-ups on parts of Edgar Ave. is still unknown at this point.
“We have to come up with something that will solve the problem forever. I think there’s a solution, based on what was explained to me, and hopefully we can do that,” Higgins said.
Higgins noted that the remediation process for the flood site is under review by the sewer authority’s operating committee. Obtaining grants to help fund remediation of the root of the flooding problem may be possible, according to Higgins, who will update the situation at the Sept. 19 commissioners meeting.
