Rails to Trails Project along the Chester Creek

educational and scientific organization dedicated to the integrity of the Chester, Ridley, and Crum creeks and their associated creek valleys.  In incorporating the Friends of the Chester Creek Branch rail-trail project, the CRC continued its mission to support, encourage, and promote the enjoyment, restoration, conservation, protection, and prudent management of the natural resources of the Chester, Ridley, and Crum Creek watersheds.

In the Fall of 1997, the Friends of the Chester Creek incorporated separately as Friends of the Chester Creek Branch, Inc. (“Friends”).  Friends received its not-for-profit (IRS 501(c)(3)) designation in early 1998. Friends has initiated the planning process for this project resulting in a comprehensive feasibility study.

Since that time, Friends has worked tirelessly with DCNR and the Delaware County Planning Commission in negotiating with SEPTA for the rights to utilize SEPTA easements and to acquire the necessary funding for the project. To date the Friends have received a commitment from the Federal Highway Administration for $2.6 million for the

construction of the entire trail and a grant in the amount of $300,000 from DCNR for engineering.

Trail map in approximate phases.

The project is divided into three phases. The first phase encompasses that portion of the rail line from Lenni Road in Middletown Township following the rail line adjunct to the Chester Creek through Aston Township crossing both Pennell Road and the Chester Creek back into Middle-town and ending approximately 500 yards south of the Knowlton Road bridge on the east side of the Creek (shown in green above). The second phase is the northernmost portion of the proposed trail starting with the SEPTA R3 station in Wawa and ending at Lenni Road (shown in yellow above).  The third phase continues from the southern end of the first phase in Middletown by following the rail line into our Township on the west side of the Chester Creek then along the Creek across Dutton Mill Road entering Chester Township until reaching the trail’s end at the historic Caleb Pussey residence in Upland (shown in blue above).

The first phase is scheduled to be completed by mid-2009. The second and third phases are to commence immediately thereafter.

Similar trail projects have been well received in Radnor and the

Wissahickon section of Fairmont Park. A similar project is under reconsideration in Chadds Ford Township after originally meeting opposition a few years ago.
