Spring
is here! |
For over a century, baseball has been hailed above all other sports as
America's national pastime. And no other game during the long
awaited season has been as eagerly anticipated as ‘Opening
Day.’ Just look at any Little Leaguer’s calendar. Vacation?
Holidays? ….all are forgotten and pale in comparison with the
coveted first game of the season. Ask any Little Leaguer
“What’s the ‘official’ start of Spring?” Chances are
their answer will not be March 21st or cherry blossoms
in D.C., or the sight of the first robin, but none other than
‘Opening Day.’ The season’s beginning means a lot to the
Little Leaguers who have waited patiently since last year’s
season for the ‘first pitch’ of ‘Opening Day.’
|
The traditional ‘first pitch’ has become an honor bestowed and
cherished - a center stage for the honored few, including U.S.
Presidents, to show their "stuff." On April 14, 1910,
President, and baseball enthusiast, William Howard Taft attended
the home opener in D.C. Since then, eleven sitting U.S. Presidents
have tossed out the season's ceremonial ‘first pitch’ in the
‘bigs.’ President Harry S. Truman showcased his ambidextrous
talent when he threw out balls with both his right and left arm in
1950. But beyond Presidents, ‘Opening Day’ has witnessed many
other historical performances, including first pitches by Aston
Valley AA honored Mike Mullner, a recent heart transplant
recipient, and Aston Middletown Little League, Joseph P. Possenti,
Jr., President of the Aston Township Board of Commissioners.

In
Aston, a lot of work goes into
‘Opening Day’ parades and ceremonies. The Little League
officials, the coaches, the managers, the parents, the volunteers,
the grounds keepers….heck….actually hundreds of adults and
thousands of hours …go into an ‘Opening Day.’ Each season,
for that matter, is a new challenge, a daunting task of organizing
hundreds of Little Leaguers into age brackets, leagues, teams and
positions appropriate for each of their circumstances. It
stretches organizational talents to new limits.
But each year, the dedicated few rise to the occasion and
make ‘Opening Day’ and the subsequent Little League season
happen. Little League officials - those dedicated few neighbors
toting bats, balls, and helmets in the back of their vehicles,
|
provide intangible value to our community that can’t be easily
measured. We entrust our kids to that ‘Little League’ and in
return, they teach them teamwork, sportsmanship,
competitiveness, duty, honor, humility, pride, good citizenship,
and all things needed to be successful!
