about aston

This site is dedicated to Fran McLaughin who created the original site from which we were all motivated to present all of what you see. He dedicated much of the final years of his life creating Aston Township's first municipal website. In thanks, we have maintained some of what he created here in memory of his efforts. The banner, the color scheme, and some of the design work still remain in his honor.

Township Action Pending

The township’s zoning hearing board met on April 29 to discuss the possibility of allowing eight gas pumps in the parking lot of the Village Green Shopping Center. Giant food store filed the application, but the pumps would be located on the other side of the main entrance drive.

Commissioners will be considering amendments to three township ordinances at their May 21 meeting. Changes in the plumbing section of the building code, restrictions on roadside billboards, and rules for placement of temporary structures in front yards will be on the agenda.

The May 21 commissioners meeting will also include a hearing to consider rezoning a triangular lot at Fisher’s Corner (Concord and Convent rds.) from commercial to institutional. Rezoning would allow construction of a 21-room dormitory to house 84 Neumann College students.

The historic Seven Stars Hotel was built in 1734 on the site now occupied by Zac’s Hamburgers. The storied structure served as Cornwallis’ headquarters, stagecoach stop, polling place, and a speakeasy, and was last known as the Village Green Hotel. The vacant building became an eyesore at Five Points Intersection and was razed in 1947.

Still Knockin’ ‘Em Down

Aston Resident Alberta ‘Birdie’ Bostwick just turned 77, but she still goes bowling on a weekly basis. Her devotion to the sport was recently rewarded by being the first woman inducted into the Delaware County USBC’s Hall of Fame.

Bostwick has lived on Bonsall Ave. for the past 49 years, and has been bowling at Brookhaven or Conchester Lanes most of that time. Her high game is a 258, and high series is 647 – both achieved only a few years ago.

“All three of my sons are still trying to beat me. We have fun. It keeps me going,” Bostwick says of bowling.

Thanks For The Service

The resignation of Sharon Certo as code enforcement office secretary was effective April 30. Certo was thanked by commissioners for her five years of service in the often thankless position.

“Sharon dealt with the public well, and that’s not always an easy job when you’re dealing with contractors and homeowners who have concerns,” noted Commissioners VP Frank Murphy.

Report White Metal Theft

The total tonnage of scrap metal recycled last year was about a third of the amount collected by the township in previous years, due to scavengers stealing white metal appliances sitting curbside in the early morning hours. Once an appliance is placed curbside for disposal, it is the property of Aston taxpayers. If a resident sees a discarded appliance being stolen, please report the act by dialing 9-1-1.

Crossing Guards Needed

Regular-duty and substitute school crossing guards are needed in Aston Township to keep students safe. The pay rate is $11.62/hour for this part-time job, which requires child abuse and criminal background checks on all applicants. Contact Diane at the Aston Police Department (610-497-2633) for more information.
