organization supports numerous township interests such as Aston Public Library, Assisi House, and Aston Lions Club.

The GFWC selects a project each year working diligently to raise monies through a variety of means to support the selected project for that year.  Last year, Operation Warm was the club’s focus and over $2,000 was raised and given to this organization who provided new winter jackets (sizes 2 toddler - 18) to children in need.

This year, the GFWC will focus on teenage mental health, working toward public awareness and assisting those who require support services.

“I have the pleasure of working with wonderful women who truly care about serving others.  We have members who have been involved in GFWC for 50 years which speaks volumes of this organization and our mission to assist those in need,” states Norma Locke, 2nd term president.  “Last year we donated 10 backpacks filled with school supplies to Penn-Delco School District.  We work closely with the school district as we offer scholarships programs for students involved in the field of nursing and vocational technical training in addition to Student of the Month and Student of the Year awards.”

The GFWC hosts social and cultural events that include bingo night, book reviews and guest speakers, meeting on the 4th Monday of each month from September through June.

On October 28, 2006, the GFWC will host a tea at the Aston Community Center in celebration of their 50th anniversary.   For more information on this upcoming event or membership inquiries, please contact Norma Locke at 610-497-5234.

In the December 2005 issue of Township Times Barbara DiMario was profiled under the heading “Making a Difference in our Community.”  Barbara, a long time Aston resident, is founder and president of the Delaware County Chapter Of Parents OF Murdered Children (POMC).  Barbara and her husband, Paul, lost their daughter

Hope Ann DiMario-Popoleo on April 21, 1993 at the hands of a murderer.  Because of their personal experience and loss of their daughter the Delaware County Chapter of POMC came into existence and is available today for those in need of support and resources to those who have, too, lost a loved one to the act of murder.

Hope gave birth to a son named Joseph.  At the young age of only 4˝  years old  Joseph was raised by his grandparents, Barbara and Paul DiMario, after his mother’s life had been taken.

Barbara and Paul, devoted grandparents, have mentored their grandson into an industrious, well-rounded, and dedicated 18 year old young man.  Joseph, who graduated Sun Valley this past June 2006, is headed to college next month to pursue a degree in mathematics and secondary education at Kutztown University.

Six years ago, Joseph was asked by a fellow classmate to join him at a DeMolay meeting.  Joseph attended with his friend and has ever since been a vital part of the Chester Pike Chapter of the DeMolay’s.

This past July 15, 2006 Joseph and his grandmother, Barbara DiMario, attended the Pennsylvania DeMolay Honors and Awards Banquet held in York, Pennsylvania.  Unbeknownst to Barbara, she had been nominated and elected to receive the “Guild of the Leather Apron” award.  This award is given only to those who have made outstanding contributions to the growth and success of the Order and one who exemplifies the ideals and precepts in daily life as well as in working with the young men in the Order of DeMolay.

Taken by surprise during the honors and awards banquet, Barbara was asked to appear on the dais by presenter Tom Labagh, executive officer of the Pennsylvania DeMolay’s and Keith Klein, grand master of DeMolay International to receive the prestigious “Guild of the Leather Apron” award.  Barbara DiMario is the first woman ever to receive this distinguished honor, both nationally and internationally, for her outstanding service to humanity in

addition for sponsoring and upholding the Chester Pike Chapter in which she was advisor.  As advisor of the Chester Pike Chapter, Barbara was also recognized as the first woman ever to hold such a title in the state of Pennsylvania.

Congratulations, Barbara.  You are truly a remarkable woman and a valued asset to each and every resident of our township.
