The
Aston Township Veterans’ Memorial Garden is now in its final
construction stage. Arrival
of the monument is expected sometime between the end of September
or early October 2006.
The Veterans’ Memorial Garden was the brainchild of the
board of commissioners who held a vision to create a green space
dedicated to the men and women of Aston Township who have
heroically served our Country, including military, police force,
and firefighter personnel.
Three years ago, Commissioner James McGinn contacted Jack
Holefelder to

request his leadership and organizational
skills to accomplish their goal in creating the gardens that would
be located on the corner of Concord and Pennell Roads.
Jack Holefelder, a life-long resident and heir to
generations of family legacy deeply grounded in Aston township,
accepted the request by the board of commissioners and became
chairman of Aston Township

Veterans’
Memorial Garden Foundation, a non-profit charitable corporation.
Jack formed a foundation board and began fundraising
efforts to begin what would be a three-year journey to memorialize
those who gave their lives through service within all military
branches, police force and firefighter organizations.
“I served in the United States Air Force for 4 years, and
served a 1 year tour during 1968-1969 in Vietnam,” states Jack.
“Losing 5 friends who were killed in action during the
Vietnam war I accepted my position as chairman of the Veterans’
Memorial Garden Foundation with pride. I had the responsibility, and ability, to do it for all of
those who lost their lives for our Country.”
Jack’s family possesses a wealth of history within our
township in addition to a long line of family members who served
in the United States Army. Jack’s
father served in WWII and fought in both Europe and Africa.
Although the Veterans’ Memorial Garden is approaching its
final stages of completion, brick pavers and other garden-related
items are still available for purchase.
These items will be strategically placed within the gardens
and will stand in tribute to a past or present member of military
service, living or deceased.
Items can also be purchased to honor a special day; the
birth of a child, a wedding anniversary or any other significant
date.
“Once the gardens are completed any
remaining funds in the Aston Township Veterans’ Memorial Garden
Foundation account will be renamed ‘Aston Township Community
Foundation.’ The
status of a non-profit charitable organization will remain in
effect so we can develop future scholarship programs and work
towards actively helping residents in our township who may be in
need of financial assistance,” says Jack.
President of the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce for
the past 23 years, Jack is also the author of the book “Passing
the Torch, Will Your Family Business Survive?” He is currently
working on the completion of two more books, one of which is
titled, “Life Is A Pile of Dirt” based on the wisdom of his 4
year-old Grandson.

Public
Information Office
A
nice surprise reached the public information office mailbox on
August 12. A letter
from a former Aston resident was addressed to the editor of
Township Times. With great pleasure, this letter is printed in its entirety.
Thank you, John.
Letter to the Editor:
As a former 20+ year resident of
Aston Township and past president of the Aston Business
Association, I am proud of the progress your community continues
to make in positioning Aston as a “family-friendly” community.
Each newsletter seems full of
activities benefiting local organizations, the police and fire
companies and the community at large.
The upcoming Community Day is just another example of the
fine work done by many residents of the town.
I know from past experience that
credit must go to many volunteers who spend countless hours
putting things all together.
Aston is fortunate to have a large number of such dedicated
individuals. Also, I
would be remiss in not mentioning the steady hand of Dick Lehr,
township manager, who for years has provided guidance for the
events, and to Joe Possenti and the board of commissioners for
their leadership in making it all happening.
Keep up the good work.
Sincerely,
John Sammartino
