Welcome Aboard

Super Wawa Stages Opening Gala

The grand opening of the Super Wawa store at 5008 Pennell Rd. was held on Aug. 31. The event brought out a host of Wawa Corporation, township and state officials to celebrate the official ribbon-cutting, done by Aston Seventh Ward Commissioner Michael Higgins.

Ceremony attendees were treated a delicious array of foods, including, of course, fresh-made hoagies. A Wawa hoagie-building contest (dubbed Hoagies For Heroes) was held between teams of Aston police officers and Aston-Beechwood and Green Ridge firefighters. The winners earned the right to name the local charity receiving a $1000 donation from Wawa, while the losers choose charities to receive $500 checks.

The staff that ran the Wawa store on the corner of Marianville Rd., including manager Debbie June, has moved across Pennell Rd. to their new home, where 40 customer service associates to operate the super-store.

Wawa has not yet decided the ultimate fate of the old store, which was the corporation’s second convenience store, built in 1964.

“Rebuilding the second store we ever opened helps us reflect on our incredible history and truly shows us how far we have come,” Wawa President/CEO Howard Stoeckel stated.

The new facility features 5700 square feet of retail space, and a total of 16 gas pumps at four separate islands. The store will be open 24/7.

The Wawa Corporation started in 1803 as an iron foundry in New Jersey. The dairy processing plant in Wawa, PA was opened in 1902, when owner George Wood took an interest in dairy farming.

Today, Wawa’s 560 outlets in the Mid-Atlantic   states   sell   over    195

million cups of coffee and 52 million built-to-order hoagies annually. The gasoline dispensed at many Wawa stores comes with a performance guarantee, and Wawa gas systems meet or exceed all Environmental Protection Agency standards.

No, gas is not free at the new Super Wawa on Pennell Rd. This is how the sign read prior to the Aug. 31 grand opening.
