Aston-Beechwood Volunteer Fire Company was granted a charter in February 1948 by the Aston Township board of commissioners.  The vision to create a fire company serving the residents of Beechwood Park and Aston Mills is credited to Ed Cordell, who in 1941, obtained the interest of 25 families and began efforts to raise funds for creating a local fire company.

Ed Cordell, who lived approximately 500 yards from where the firehouse stands today, housed a 1923 Hale Pumper 500 gallon fire truck in a garage on his property, along with a few pieces of fire equipment that were acquired over a period of years.  In 1948, with a membership totaling 68 men and women,

the Aston-Beechwood Volunteer Fire Company #1 was born.

Green Ridge Volunteer Fire Company

2006-2007 Officials from left: Mike Evans, assistant chief; Ken Dawson, Jr., assistant chief; Bob Herre, deputy chief; Dave Evans, chief

In April 1942 the first meeting, consisting of 24 men, was held to begin organizing efforts to establish Green Ridge Volunteer Fire Company.  The members of this group shared their joint concern to offer fire protection to the existing 100 homes and the projected construction of an additional 250 homes to be added to the local community.

Harry Ryle was elected president and fundraising events proved sufficient as their state charter was approved on August 14, 1942.  During this same month a 1926 Dodge truck called “Old Betsy” was purchased and resided in a private garage owned by resident, Sam Forrest.

A detailed chronological history is available on Green Ridge Volunteer Fire Company along with other interesting facts and information by visiting their web site at: www.greenridge63.com.

Fires can destroy lives.  The following fire safety tips can reduce and prevent a fire tragedy.

  • ·          Every home needs smoke detectors that should be placed on every floor especially near the bedrooms, kitchen, garage and fireplace.  Fire extinguishers should also be placed in accessible areas on every floor.

  • ·          Turn off space heaters before sleeping or leaving a room.  Space heaters should be place at least 3 feet away from any object.

  • ·          Do not overload electrical outlets.

  • ·          Educate your children that matches and lighters are not toys.  Keep these items in a place that are far from view.

  • ·          Electrical cords that become frayed or cracked should never be used.  Replacements are inexpensive and can be easily purchased.

  • ·          When not in use, unplug small appliances; toaster, coffee maker, hair dryer, etc.

  • ·          Never leave your home when a clothes dryer is in operation.

  • ·          Keep all exits from your home and business office free from clutter.

  • ·          Teach children how and when to use 9-1-1.  Keep emergency numbers visible by placing them on a list by each telephone.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission offers a comprehensive booklet titled “Your Home Fire Safety Checklist” that is available for download at: www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/pubs/556.html Another great resources on “Fire Prevention in the Home” is available at: seniors.tcnet.org/articles/article04.html
