| Bert Poole |
At 17 years of age,
Bert Poole was challenged by a Swarthmore College professor to
play a game of table tennis.
From that moment on, and almost 60 years later, Bert has
been playing ever since and walks away with gold.
Drafted
into the Army in 1952 Bert was the top player during his tour of
duty in Germany until 1954 when he returned home.
He married Eleanor in 1954, his wife of 53 years, and
together raised their two children, Bert, Jr., and Dianne.
Bert’s
athletic awards over the past 6 decades are impressive.
From 1989 to 2005
Inducted
into the 2003 Who’s Who in the National Senior Games
Association, Bert attributes his continued champion status to
strategy.
“While my challengers are warming up, I’m thinking.
It’s all about out-thinking your opponent,” says Bert.
“If you and I have the same physical ability but I can
out-think you, I’ll win.”
Obviously Bert’s game strategy has proved itself flawless
as he has been named champion in over 40 national table tennis
tournaments throughout the many years of his athletic career.
He continues to play at every opportunity and now enjoys
teaching young men and women the strategic planning that is needed
to enjoy the competitive game of table tennis.

Bert and his wife, Eleanor, reside in Aston Township and
have lived in the same house for 52 years.
Bert, we wish you every success as you participate in
future tournaments!
