Emergency Preparedness Guide Gives Tips For Disaster Survival

A great deal of time and effort has gone into formulating action plans that hopefully will never be put into practice. Delaware County Council has distributed a fold-out booklet to every Delco municipality, offering sound advice on where to go and what to do in the event of a community-wide emergency.

Since every emergency is different, the recommended response to various situations differs, as well. Tuning in to local radio stations (KYW-610AM or WHYY-91FM) and television news or cable information channels is a good start.

The first decision to be made is whether to evacuate the area or remain indoors, aka Shelter-In-Place. If evacuation is officially prescribed, a supply kit containing items such as important documents, car/house keys, cash, bottled water and non-perishable food, flashlight and batteries, radio, medications and first-aid kit, blankets, and maps should be prepared. If sheltering in your home, supplies such as water (1-3 gallons per day per person), canned foods (including pet food) and vitamins, emergency tools (including matches), changes of clothing and bedding, and basic medical items are of utmost importance.

Setting up a communications plan ahead of time is also advised. An out-of-state contact should be designated, since long-distance calling is often easier than making local calls during an emergency.

A total of 15 evacuation shelters have been identified across the county. Should this action be recommended by authorities, Aston residents would seek shelter at Sun Valley High School, located on Pancoast Ave.

The primary emergency response arteries in the county are Rtes. 1 and 322, and I-95 and I-476 – aka the Blue Route.

Mt. Hope Marks Bicentennial

Mount Hope United Methodist Church has been celebrating the 200th anniversary of their first church building all year long. The party began in January with the dedication of a new flag pole, and culminated on Oct. 14 with a visit from Bishop Marcus Matthews and a recognition ceremony for 237 long-standing members.

Aston grade-schoolers proudly carried their school’s banner down Concord Rd. in the Community Day Parade.
